Bible verse: Luke 12: 49–50

I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to be baptised with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!

Message: Being a Christian signifies following Jesus even in His suffering and death.

Summary

• The fire mentioned by Jesus is an image for the glad tidings of redemption and for the Holy Spirit.
• The suffering and death of Jesus are prerequisites for the coming of the Holy Spirit.
• We too must pursue the path of Jesus’ baptism, that is, go through suffering and death.
• As Christians, we have been given the commission to spread the fire of the gospel so that it can also be kindled in other people.
